Food dye became the ideal material in this series. Its consistency was more viscous and vibrant than ink and had a lower mass than other materials like paint, honey, wax etc., allowing it to move more freely when spun. Layering the food dye with alternating colours revealed the changes that come with the addition of materials over time. The substrate chosen to facilitate the transformation of the material was trace paper specifically for its non-absorbent, firm and light physical qualities. In this series, the apparatus selected was a paper helicopter because it can spin the substrate and material without human interaction. The motions of the apparatus give rise to multiple distinct characteristics in the material’s form and its interaction with the substrate. These characteristics include the materials flow into creases caused by spinning, the inclination towards the lowest points caused by gravity, and the splatters caused by the helicopters landing impact. Many other variables such as wind, humidity, mass etc., may have had varying effects on the apparatus and, in turn, affected the ending form and transformative relationship between material and substrate.
